These sterile collection vials contain a pre-reduced transport medium to sustain microorganisms during transport from collection site /patient to the laboratory. Viability of a wide variety of anaerobic, facultative and aerobic organisms can be maintained for up to 72 hours at 20° to 25°C. For isolation and identification of the microorganisms, the specimen must then be removed from the transport container and cultured on appropriate diagnostic growth media once in the laboratory.
